The last lap restart was nothing but pure chaos for everyone on the track, with several drivers out. Since there was no space left on the track in the first turn, Bubba Wallace cut the grass and got some positions
As soon as the first turn receiptChase Elliott spins around. Behind him, several more cars called and went off the track. Bubba Wallace is seen avoiding spinning cars, chopping grass, and returning to the track before the half-court. According to the rules, he had to take the escape route and rejoin the field just like Austin Dillon.

The main reason people are upset is that last year Chase Briscoe was forced off the track before he came back the same way Bubba joined. However, Briscoe was later penalized for the move, unlike driver number 23.
While Bubba outperformed everyone by avoiding the escape route, he actually gained an unfair advantage over the other drivers who weren’t involved in the chaos that followed an earlier turn.
It wouldn’t be a problem if Bubba gave up his position advantage and slipped by a few cars. But Bubba used this unfair advantage to claim fifth place after Ross Chastain received a corner-cutting penalty.

Now guess if people don’t like what’s going on at Watkins Glen Network, they can just use the grass. Abbreviating Bupa this way says it’s legal. Roval’s couple sites can do the same. But really, did anyone think NASCAR would punish the Social Justice Warrior?
