Washington, DC (5 August 2022) – DC United have signed Belgian international striker Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace in the Premier League on a permanent transfer deal. Benteke will join the club as a designated player pending receipt of a P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Black and Red signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Benteke until 2024 with the club’s option in 2025.
“Christian is a great player who has played at the highest level for a long time,” said DC United head coach Wayne Rooney. “His experience and ability to score goals and help the team will be invaluable. It is exciting for the team and I to get him involved and play. He will make a huge difference.”
Benteke joins DC United after spending the last 10 seasons in the Premier League with Aston Villa, Liverpool and most recently Crystal Palace. The 31-year-old has scored 86 goals and scored 23 assists in 280 Premier League matches.
Benteke has worked with Crystal Palace for the last six seasons since signing on 20 August 2016 from Liverpool Football Club in a $34 million deal. The striker made his debut for the London club on 27 August 2016 against Bournemouth in the Premier League. Benteke scored his first goal for Crystal Palace in the next match on 10 September 2016 in a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough. During his time with Crystal Palace, the Belgian scored 37 goals and scored 12 assists in 177 matches across all competitions.

Prior to joining Crystal Palace, Benteke spent the 2015-16 season with English powerhouse Liverpool after signing the striker for $51 million from Aston Villa on July 22, 2015. In one season with the Reds, Benteke scored 10 goals and scored six assists in 42 games. in all competitions. He scored his first goal for the club on 17 August 2015 in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Benteke became one of the world’s most valuable strikers during his time with Aston Villa in the Premier League after joining the club from KRC Genk in a $9 million transfer deal on August 31, 2012. The Belgian scored his first goal for the club on his debut against Swansea on September 15 2012 in the English Premier League match. In his first season at Villa, Benteke scored 19 goals and scored four assists in the Premier League. He had the fourth most goals that season behind Robin van Persie (Manchester United), Luis Suarez (Liverpool) and Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur). In three seasons at Villa, Benteke scored 49 goals and scored 12 assists in 101 matches in all competitions.
Benteke has been a solid player with the Belgian national team since his debut on May 19, 2010, when he was just 19 years old. The striker scored 18 goals and scored three assists in 45 matches for Belgium. He scored his first goal for Belgium in a 4-2 victory over the Netherlands on 15 August 2012 in an international friendly match. Benteke was also part of the UEFA Euro roster, making three appearances for his country in 2016 and 2020. His last appearance came for Belgium in a 3-0 win over Burkina Faso on March 29, 2022, and scored an assist in the match.
The 31-year-old started his professional career with KRC Genk in the Belgian Jupiler League after joining the youth academy from Standard Liege (Belgium) in 2006. Benteke made his debut at the age of 17 in a match. Against Sint-Truiden on February 22, 2008. He played 10 matches for Genk before returning to his former club, Standard Liege, on January 1, 2009. The striker scored three goals and scored two goals in 11 matches for Standard Liege in the 2008-09 season and was loaned to his teammate Belgian KV Kortrijk on August 7, 2009. In one season, Benteke scored 16 goals and scored nine assists in 37 matches to lead Kortrijk to one of the best finishing touches in the club’s history. On 30 June 2010, Benteke was recalled from his loan and sent on loan for another season to KV Mechelen (Belgium). In one year at Mechelen, the striker scored seven goals and scored one assist in 20 matches before returning from loan on 30 June 2011. The Belgian was sold back to Genk on August 31, 2011 and scored 20 goals and 11 assists in two seasons before being transferred to Aston Villa on August 31, 2012.
